An unstable superfluid Stewartson layer in a differentially rotating neutron star

چکیده

Experimental and numerical evidence is reviewed for the existence of a Stewartson layer in spherical Couette flow at small Ekman and Rossby numbers (E < ∼ 10 , Ro < ∼ 10 ), the relevant hydrodynamic regime in the superfluid outer core of a neutron star. Numerical simulations of a superfluid Stewartson layer are presented for the first time, showing how the layer is disrupted by nonaxisymmetric instabilities. The unstable ranges of E and Ro are compared with estimates of these quantities in radio pulsars that exhibit glitches. It is found that glitching pulsars lie on the stable side of the instability boundary, allowing differential rotation to build up before a glitch. New instability windows for rotating neutron stars

We reanalyze the r-mode instability in rotating superfluid neutron stars. To this aim we develop a model of resonance interaction of normal m = 2 r-mode with superfluid modes. We show that this interaction dramatically modifies the instability window, that is the region of stellar spin frequencies and temperatures in which a neutron star becomes unstable with respect to radiation of gravitation...

Lagrangian perturbation theory of nonrelativistic rotating superfluid stars

We develop a Lagrangian perturbation framework for rotating non-relativistic superfluid neutron stars. This leads to the first generalization of classic work on the stability properties of rotating stars to models which account for the presence of potentially weakly coupled superfluid components. Our analysis is based on the standard two-fluid model expected to be relevant for the conditions th...

It is shown how to set up a mathematically elegant and fully rela-tivistic superfluid model that can provide a realistic approximation (neglecting small anisotropies due to crust solidity, magnetic fields, et cetera, but allowing for the regions with vortex pinning) of the global structure of a rotating neutron star, in terms of just two independently moving constituents, one of which represent...

We investigate the modal properties of the r-modes with l = m in rotating neutron stars with the superfluid core, where l and m are the indices of the spherical harmonic function representing the angular dependence of the r-modes. For the modal analysis, we employ simple neutron star models, which are composed of the normal fluid envelope and the core filled with neutron and proton superfluids ...

Inertial modes of neutron stars with the superfluid core

We investigate the modal properties of inertial modes of rotating neutron stars with the core filled with neutron and proton superfluids, taking account of entrainment effects between the superfluids. In this paper, the entrainment effects are modeled by introducing a parameter η so that no entrainment state is realized at η = 0. We find that inertial modes of rotating neutron stars with the su...
